GEAR Research
GEAR 1.1
The Geriatric Emergency care Applied Research Network (GEAR) 1.1  aims to establish infrastructure to support collaborative, interdisciplinary research to improve care for older adults. Toward that end, we have established five key research priorities and how to study them: cognitive impairment, medication safety, elder abuse, falls, and care transitions. GEAR 1.1 is funded by the National Institutes of Health and other partners (grant #R33AG058926).

People with dementia are twice as likely to use the ED and 1.5 times more likely to have an avoidable visit. When in the ED, they often struggle and are at greater risk of poor outcomes. The Geriatric Emergency Care Applied Research Network 2.0 – Advancing Dementia Care (GEAR 2.0 ADC) is a National Institutes of Health funded program (Grant # R61AG069822) to advance the science supporting emergency care for people with dementia.Â
